The territory " Montañas do Courel " is the perfect showcase to observe the geological history that includes the Lower and Middle Paleozoic, and to a lesser extent also the end of the Tertiary and Quaternary . This territory, located on the Iberian Massif, is made up of rocks ranging from the Neoproterozoic to the Carboniferous and conserva numerous singular elements referring to both stratigraphy and tectonics, produced by the Variscan Orogeny, -with the great Tumbado do Courel Syncline as a reference- in this geographical part of the globe. The set of these and other geological characteristics, grouped under this territorial group, is what gives it distinction and puts it in value over the rest. On the other hand, there are also numerous paleontological and mineralogical remains, metamorphism, glacialism, karst cavities, landscape and cultural heritage, elements that contribute to increasing its value. In short, it is therefore one of the most diverse areas, at a geological level, in the northwest of the peninsula.
